Calgary to Vancouver, with a spot of skiing in Banff

We arrived in Calgary International Airport at 8am after a 10 hour flight from London. We had always wanted to see the west of Canada having spent many family holidays in Toronto and Montreal. Half of my family live in Canada so it was a great opportunity for us to take free holidays.

We decided we would start our holiday in Calgary and drive across to Vancouver, stopping off in Banff to do some skiing. Banff Hotels can be very expensive as it’s a major tourist resort so we had to shop around for the best deal. We eventually decided on the Rimrock Resort in Banff who were offering a very attractive deal. The Rimrock is ideally situated as it’s only 10 mins drive from the centre of Banff.

CENOTES-MAYAN RIVIERA MEXICO

The riviera maya is also famous for the “cenotes” (natural water pools) . There are many of these pools all over the state of Quintana Roo. Some of these cenotes are near the ocean and others are more inland. You can also find cenotes inside some caves. Actually the state of Quintana Roo has the largest undergound river in the world and this is the place where some movies have been filmed.

What do you do at 2 o’clock in the morning when you have just arrived in Heathrow’s new terminal 5 on a 12 hour flight from Florida and you are told that your baggage has been delayed by the current backlog and you will have to wait 6 more hour’s before you can collect it.

Apart from getting arrested for foul and abusive behaviour (Naomi Campbell springs to mind) you could always calm down and check into a hotel.

TULUM - MAYAN RIVIERA MEXICO

TULUM - MAYAN RIVIERA MEXICO

The Ruins in Tulum Quintana Roo is a must see when traveling to the mayan Riviera in Mexico. Even if you are not a lover of ancient ruins you can still have so much fun. That is because these ruins are the only ones in the country where you can learn about mayan culture and also lie on the beach or swim in the crystal clear caribbean sea. If you happen to be in Cancun, you will only need to take a 2 hour drive to get there.

Learn to speak Italian through Podcasts

I have started downloading podcasts of Italian lessons to my iPod and it is working very well. I can listen to the podcasts while I am taking a walk or traveling. Of course, people look at me oddly since I am talking to myself while I walk. There are a bunch of free podcasts you can subscribe to at iTunes if you have an iPod.

Many sites other than iTunes also offer free and subscription based podcasts. I subscribe to the free ones and if I like them I either make a donation to that organization or if they have a higher level subscription rate that adds value I will buy that.

Sitting on the Via Veneto in Rome

The Via Veneto was made famous in Fellini’s film “La Dolce Vita”. The Via Veneto came to symbolize the “sweet life” of Rome in the 1950’s and 60’s. Today it isthe long winding street knownfor its luxury hotels, cafès, restaurants, shops and in some key places wild traffic.

I love the Via Veneto. Dr. Seuss wrote a book “And to Think I Saw it on Mulberry Street”. That is the way I feel about the Via Veneto. Sit in a café on the Via Veneto long enough and you will see enough to fill your travel journal. Italian business men wander by in their designer suits with their jackets swung casually over their shoulders, elderly men and women stop by and order strange looking drinks (no ice please!), tourists zoom by rushing to the next Roman ruin on their “to do” list, vespas almost hit pedestrians, taxi drivers shout at other drivers and pedestriansand all up and down the street people are talking to each other as if they are about to burst with all they have to say.
