The Brazilian airline TAM has decided to operate a weekly direct flight between Cabo Frio and Buenos Aires between July 5th and August 9th.According to Yacht Charters’ Magazine, Cabo Frio is in the Rio de Janeiro province of Brazil and TAM hopes to capitalize on the growing number of passengers traveling between these two cities during this peak season.Argentines looking to escape winter can go to Brazil’s beaches and Brazilians can come to Argentina to enjoy the vibrant cultural scene.TAM operates many flights to Buenos Aires, but this particular flight will be the only one going directly to Cabo Frio.

A special collection of Picasso paintings is being exhibited for the first time in Latin American in the Casa de la Cultura de Buenos Aires from June 27th to July 27th.The paintings on display are normally part of the permanent collection of art in the Picasso House in Madrid.The works were given by Picasso to his barber, a fellow Spanish exile in France.The barber eventually donated them to the museum in Spain.Buenos Aires is lucky enough to have these fine paintings on display because of an exchange agreement between it and Madrid.The Picasso exhibit is on 575 Av. de Mayo and runs Tuesday through Sunday from 2 to 8; entrance is free.

On Saturday alone, 23 flights arrived in Bariloche’s airport, and another 15 were expected to arrive on Sunday, all full of tourists ready to hit the ski slopes.These visitors represent the first strong wave of tourism to Bariloche for the 2008 ski season and show “faith” that the weather will be with them and that the threat of volcanic interruption from Chaiten is minimal.According to ANBariloche, of the 3,300 visitors who arrived, 2,600 were foreigners, mostly Brazilian.The total number of tourists who arrived in this one weekend equals the number of tourists who arrived in all of May.Based on an estimate from Aeropuertos Argentina 2000, the total number of tourists expected to arrive in July via air is 60,000.

This Saturday was the Carreras de las Estrellas, the equivalent of Argentina’s Breeders’ Cup World Championship.Taking place at the Hipodromo Argentino de Palermo in Buenos Aires, the biggest race of the day, the Gran Premio Estrellas Classic, offered a grand prize of $236,710.According to The Thoroughbred Times, the money and the glory went to the horse Flag Copado, who won easily by nine lengths.Horse racing is very popular in Argentina, with a special short section of the Clarín devoted to it every day.This particular race is one of the biggest of the year and the results made ripples in both national and international horse racing news.

This Saturday at 1 pm, Democrats Abroad Argentina organized a meeting on the Puente de la Mujer, one of the most recognizable landmarks in Puerto Madero, to participate in an international show of support for Senator Barack Obama, called “The Obama Bridge Project.”The slogan of the event was “Yes We Span,” a spin-off of the Obama campaign’s “Yes We Can,” and the idea was to take pictures of Democrats abroad spanning the bridges of the world.According to iReport, the Buenos Aires event was held in conjunction with 4,000 other events around the world.In addition to posing for the photograph, volunteers were also on hand to help register voters for the upcoming election, a project they have been working on with the Republicans Abroad.

The bike touring company Ciclismo Classico, which operates biking tours throughout Europe, announced in a press release that they are adding three new tours:Vietnam, New Zealand and Chile/Argentina.When the company started 20 years ago in the United States, their focus was on Italy, but now they are expanding. They are offering two different Chile/Argentina bike tours, one eight day and one ten day tour of around 200 miles.The 200 miles include the Seven Lakes and five different national parks and, if you take the extra two days, also includes a trip to Santiago to drink some fabulous wines.This trip will begin October 25th, 2008.

Yesterday was International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, sponsored by the United Nations’ Office on Drugs and Crime.According to the Argentine government, they are promoting awareness about this day and the problem of drugs and drug trafficking by hosting a series of events for children and adolescents.These educational programs, entitled “No me hace falta” or “I don’t need it,” focused on reminding youth that they have outlets other than drugs and showing them the consequences of drug use.The programs have run all week and will continue this Saturday, when 500 children, their parents, and various community representatives will come together in Mataderos to recognize this day and its importance to Argentines.

At the Recoleta Cultural Center, a new exhibit entitled “Recoleta CompArte—Young Art without Selection.”This show will be open to anyone between the age of 18 and 35 who lives in Buenos Aires and wants to display their art work in this historic space.The exhibit is meant both as a way to encourage young artists who are looking for a break and as a way to bring “spontaneity” and “diversity” into the art world.Call for works begins on July 2nd and space will be allotted on a first come, first serve basis.Works can be two or three dimensional and the subject matter is unrestricted.The exhibit itself opens to the public on July 11th and is sure to be, if nothing else, a fascinating glimpse into the artistic life of the ordinary Argentine.

The film Café de los maestros, or Café of the Greats, opened yesterday in Argentina and celebrates the men who have helped make tango what it is today.The Clarínreviewer describes the film as “all the glories of tango together” and the government has named it of “national interest.”What is the film about?It is both a record of the 2006 concert given by the Colón Theater Orchestra and a series of interviews with musicians who participated.The film tries to place the musicians and their music within the complex history of tango, which is a difficult task.The dance and music of tango are so central to the porteño identity that they seem at times to defy time or logic.
