In a small town in the jungle of Yungas, electricity has been introduced into homes for the very first time. The town is a five street, isolated place called Los Naranjos, and over 400 people live there.According to the Clarín, the project of getting electricity to this town was spear headed by Comunidad Kolla de Los Naranjos and the Pro Yungas foundation. The project itself was not too expensive; they simply installed a turbine and 35,000 pesos later they had electricity.Residents who had lived their whole lives without electric lights seem to be very excited about the development of their town and the improvements that are bringing up everyone’s quality of life.

Argentine President Cristina Kirchner, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez met in Buenos Aires yesterday.According to The Age, this meeting was going to just be a bilateral meeting between Argentina and Brazil, but Chavez became involved at the last moment, making it a meeting between what Chavez calls the “main axis” of South America. After the meeting between the leaders, Chavez was very open with the media, telling them that the leaders were thinking of creating a South American gas pipe line that would stretch 8,000 kilometers. They leaders will meet again in September, when perhaps the ramifications of this potential partnership will be a little clearer.

In July, 41 people who are the tenth born child in their family met in Buenos Aires, setting a new Guinness World Record.According to the Catholic News Agency, this gathering was convoked to honor St. Gianna Beretta Molla and to support the value of families in Catholic homes. The people who participated in the event certainly know a lot about family. It was organized by Mariano and Luz Carreras, who wanted tenth-born children to have a chance to get together and talk about their experiences growing up in such exceptional circumstances. The Carreras realize that large families can be a controversial topic these days, but they note that without large families none of these children would exist, nor would their unique experiences.

Yesterday, over 2,000 trucks were stranded because the Cristo Redentor tunnel between Argentina and Chile was blocked by snow. This tunnel, high in the mountains, is a key pass between the two nations for both commerce and tourism, since there are several resorts near by. No doubt the tourists were happier than the truckers about the arrival of snow. According to China View, the snow blockage is on the Chilean side and they say that they are doing every thing they can to get the snow out of the way and the drivers on the road again. In the mean time, Argentine drivers are being advised to use alternative routes that go through the eastern provinces of Neuquen and Jujuy.

I sauntered up to the tall black gates when the uniformed groundskeeper approached me and asked if I had a reservation. I didn’t. And it was a Friday night. He corroborated both facts, and added that there would be a 45-minute wait. As many onlookers would agree, La Casa Polaca imbues an air of exclusivity and intrigue. A tiny sign by the gated entrance whispers the presence of a restaurant, and a few small windows at the ground level peer into a curious dining salon. And so, we were especially excited about getting in when the news came of an available table.
