The provincial legislature of Santa Cruz recently voted to devote 80,000 hectares to the creation of a new national park: the Bosque Petrificado de Jaramillo (Petrified Forest of Jaramillo).According to La Nación, the Petrified Forest will now be far better protected than it was in the past.Petrified wood in the province of Santa Cruz comes from enormous trees which, during the Jurassic Period 130 million years ago, covered much of Patagonia.When they fell and the climate changed, they became some of the oldest and largest fossils seen today on the earth.With the addition of this national park, the province of Santa Cruz now has four national parks within its borders.

Argentina and Brazil are considered to be the two teams to beat in the men’s soccer tournament at the 2008 Olympic Games this year.Argentina, of course, is eager to defend its gold medal from the last Olympic Games.Brazil, despite its prowess as a world soccer power for many years, has never won a gold medal in soccer.According to the Philadelphia Daily News, if Argentina or Brazil win their first round groups, they will go directly to the championships.Who might come in third?Assuming these powers perform they way that they should, the field is wide open, and the U.S., among others, is looking to at least get a medal, even if they can’t beat Argentina or Brazil.

This weekend, Eduardo Romero won the U.S. Senior Open, playing before 45,000 people at the Broadmoor Golf Club, in Colorado Springs.According to La Voz,the only other Argentine to win this golf tournament won it back in 1980, Romero’s first very on the professional golfing circuit.He is also the first international golfer to win this U.S. tournament since 1997.He finished with a score of 274, six under par.Romero came back to Argentina yesterday to his home province of Cordoba.He said he had been very anxious to get back and share the victory with his family, especially since it is the first time in his career that he has won a Major.

Today, the Locarno Film Festival begins in Switzerland and two different Argentine films are competing in the second most important category, New Filmmakers.The films are La orilla que se abisma (The Shore that Amazes), directed by Gustavo Fontán, and El sueño del perro (The Dream of the Dog), directed by Paulo Pécora.According to Revista Ñ, both films competed in the BAFICI Film Festival held in Buenos Aires earlier this year.The most important category of the competition is the Official Competition, and there is no Argentine film this year.However, there is a joint project between Perú, Argentina, Germany and France called Dioses (Gods), directed by Peruvian director Josué Méndez, that is in the running for the highest honor at the festival.
