In Argentina, San Cayetano (Saint Cajetan) is the Patron Saint of Work and Bread, and on August 7th, people from around the nation go to the Church of San Cayentano in Liniers, a part of the city of Buenos Aires. Yesterday, thousands of Argentines came to the church to renew their devotion and ask the saint for good luck in the next year with providing for their families and their futures.According to the Clarín, the line to enter the church was 20 blocks long by the time it opened at midnight yesterday. People had been waiting there in tents for several days, just to make sure they got inside. Similar ceremonies happened across Argentina; those who could not make it to the church in Buenos Aires practiced their own rituals to honor this saint and hope for a better future.

The Colon Theater has been under construction since the end of October 2006, and now the project is getting a new wind as various organizations in charge of the renovation are meeting to discuss the project’s future.According to La Nación, the Ministry of Urban development will meet next week with the companies in charge of restoring the theater.The company Syasa is currently assessing the progress made up to this point in the interior and they will have to present their plans for the future based on this assessment. Mauricio Macri wants the theater to be open by the 25 of May, 2010—the nation’s bicentennial—for a performance of Aida.To achieve this, everyone will have to work together and work hard to get this wonderful theater as good as old—as good as it was when it was inaugurated in 1908.

This Sunday, as part of Neuquen’s Children’s Day celebrations, a traveling production of Peter Pan will be performed free of charge for children and their parents.This production, created by teachers of music and physical education, has already been performed 12 times in cities across the province.Performances are held only in preschools, elementary schools, and day cares, where they share this classic story of magic and childhood with thousands of Argentine children.According to the newspaper Rio Negro, the teachers wanted a chance to honor the smallest children on their day.After their performance in Neuquen, they will go on to perform in the town of Centenario.

The 10th annual Festival de Tango begins August 15th and runs through August 24th at a variety of venues across the city.Opening night takes place at the Teatro Avenida and will include a concert by Master Leopoldo Federico.The program after the 15th will run every day from noon to 9 and will include tango shows, classes, conferences, seminars, and film screenings.According to the government website, the Ministry of Culture is offering free tickets to this exciting festival; they can be picked up at the Casa de la Cultura on Avenida de Mayo 575.Anyone can go there, and get up to 6 tickets total to three different events.It is one of the biggest tango spectacles in the world, so tickets will go fast!

Yesterday, the Argentine men’s soccer team played its first game as the defending gold medal champion at the Beijing games.According to Goal, the game was played in Shanghai Stadium in front of 57,000 people.Argentina was the favorite to win and they did not disappoint as they defeated the Ivory Coast 2-1.Lionel Messi, who Barcelona released at the last moment to play in the games, scored the goal that put Argentine ahead in the first half.Then, early in the second half, Ivory Coast tied the game up, making for an exciting finish.The final, game winning goal was scored by Lautaro Acosta in the 83rd minute of the game.
