Yesterday, the Argentine Senate reviewed a proposition about making medical care for food related disorders mandatory for health care plans.For the purposes of this bill, food related disorders include anorexia, bulimia, and obesity.All of these are growing problems in Argentina, as they are in the rest of the world, making their treatment an important part of the health care system.This bill was declared to be of national interest, as are other projects including limiting the advertizing of junk food to children.According to Río Negro,the Senate reviewed and passed the same bill last year, but it was then modified by the Congress, so they now have to go over it again.As they passed it last time, it is expected that they will do so again.

Seven students and graduates of the Faculty of Architecture at the National University of Rosario are going to visit 50 cities in 40 days, a whirlwind tour of cities within Mercosur.According to IPS, the project is called Proyecto Brasilia (the Brasilia Project) because the city of Brasilia is a strange amalgamation of architectural phenomenon.It was created to be a “modern” city and it will be interesting for the students to contrast it with other small towns and cities in Latin America.When the students return from their over 10,000 kilometer journey, they will put together an exhibit with a catalogue of buildings visited en route, a DVD, a book and a documentary film.

Following hard on the heels of Children’s Day, Día de la Juventud (Youth Day) was celebrated on August 12th with the launch of a new website and publication, both called Generación BA.The website has many features, including current events, classifieds, and a forum.According to the Buenos Aires government’s website, the new site encourages teenagers to be involved in the culture of their city and to utilize online forms of communication like blogs to connect with one another and share ideas.The first edition of the magazine Generación BA was also released to celebrate teenagers on their day; like the website, it also promotes exchanging ideas and promoting the artistic and cultural development of youth.

In an Olympic match watched by thousands of Argentines over their breakfasts, Argentina defeated Serbia in soccer 2-0.Their two goals came from a penalty kick by Lavezzi and a shot by Buonanotte off of a free throw. According to the Clarín,Argentina seemed in control most of the game, allowing them to give some of their players on the bench a chance to get in the game.Their victory makes them the winners of Group A, ahead of the Ivory Coast and Australia.Their next opponent will be Holland and, as the tournament is now instant elimination, they must win to continue in search of the gold medal.

Agustina de Alba Best Argentina Sommelier of 2008

On Monday, Agustina de Alba won a sommelier competition held at the Four Seasons and organized by the Asociación Argentina de Sommeliers.According to the Clarín, Alba was a surprise winner over the other three finalist, two men and one woman.Only 20 years old, Alba has been interested in wine and wine tasting since she was fourteen-years-old and her father took her to Mendoza.After a trip to the vineyards, she became passionate about the subject and one of her high school teacher’s recommended she pursue being a sommelier as a career.Now, she is accepted to the Escuela Argentina de Sommeliers and will represent Argentina at the Pan-American competition of 2009.
