Argentine wines have become more and more popular in the United States ever since they began exporting them there around 15 years ago. This week, the Miami Herald features the Argentine winery Doña Paula, which is currently releasing several wines onto the American Market. The Doña Paula winery was founded in 1997 and has 3,400 acres of land south of Mendoza capital, near the Andes, where much of Argentina’s wine production happens. This vineyard, like many others that are currently being able to expand into the international market, is benefiting from outside investors, in this case the Claro Group of Chile. The Herlad praised this winery for its Estate Malbec wine and its Los Cardos wine, both of which have complex flavors and are fairly inexpensive, starting at nine dollars.

The Argentine women’s field hockey team finally got a much needed win on Thursday when they beat Japan 2-1.In order to even have a chance of moving forward to the semi-finals and then the gold medal (or any medal), they had to win yesterday.According to the ClarÃn, Las Leonas had tied both of their first two games against the United States and Great Britian 2-2, and in both games they had originally gone up 2-0 before losing the lead. When they went up 2-0 yesterday, they had to fight hard against the anxiety that they would once again squander their 2-0 lead.Argentina came into the tournament as one of the favorites to win because they had recently won the Champion’s trophy in Europe. Now, it looks like they may be back on track, though they will face stiff competition before they reach their goal.

Right now, an artistic exhibit is opening in the Botanical Gardens of Buenos Aires, on Av. Santa Fe, which highlights the simply moments of Argentine life.According to the government website, the exhibit was created by Gabriela Osorio and is called “Construcciones†(Constructions). On display are drawing of scenes of quotidian life:children reading a book on a bench, one child carrying her younger brother.Osorio said that she wanted to create a hyper realistic work that showed small, seeming unimportant details in scenes that might at first appear utopic.Through these perhaps conflicting details and scenes, she wanted to create a “labyrinth†of possible poetic and true subjects. An interesting proposition that is sure to be enjoyable in the beautiful Botanical Gardens, which themselves offer an interesting contrast to the bustling city.

The National Geologic and Mining Service of Chile announced Wednesday that the Chaitén Volcano, which erupted earlier this year, was showing signs that it might do so again.According to La Nación, the volcano spewed ashes reaching up to six kilometers from the crater late on Wednesday night. When the volcano erupted on May 2nd, 7,000 residents of the town of El Chaitén in Chile had to leave their homes and many ski resorts in Argentina, including Bariloche, were forced to shut down for a while as ash rained from the ski. With winter still in swing, everyone is hoping that the volcano will remain quite despite these rather discouraging signs of renewed life.
