Today is the first day of the 14th annual Guitars of the World Festival, an event that brings together musicians from across the world to share their guitar techniques and regional music.According to My Buenos Aires Travel Guide, the festival has hosted over 700 artists from 36 different countries from America, Europe, Asia and Africa.This year, 250 artists will give 280 performances around Argentina in a total of 82 venues.In Buenos Aires, the shows will take place at 8 at the Centro Cultural Recoleta today, the National Library on October 5th, and the Espacio Tucuman on October 12th. Entrance to all events is free.

Travelocity Expands Spanish Language Options

Travelocity, one of the major travel sites on the internet, continued to increase its Spanish language offerings yesterday as they launched a new Spanish language version of the website.According to Market Watch, the new site is aimed specifically at Latin America, and within that specifically at Chile, Columbia, and Peru.On the site there are over 70,000 hotels added for the region as well as expanded flight and car rental options for those traveling in this region of the world.Travelocity launched an Argentine specific site in April and had launched one of Mexico even before that.This new expansion compliments its older offerings, making it a more comprehensive source for Latin American and Spanish language travel.

New Moon Handbook on Patagonia Makes US Tour

Moon Handbooks is releasing two new guides to Argentina, one specifically for Buenos Aires and one for the region of Patagonia.According to Southern Cone Travel, the books’ author, Wayne Bernhardson, will be traveling throughout the United States presenting his books and hosting slide-show lectures with question and answer sessions for anyone interested in planning their trip to Argentina.Those who attend the presentations will be able to participate in a raffle for one free ticket to Santiago or Buenos Aires from any LAN Airlines gateway in the US or Canada.The presentations begin in San Francisco on October 2nd and cover the US until they end on October 27th in Pasadena, California.

The jazz artist Esmeralda Spalding is promoting her latest album and performing in Neuquén on October 28th.From the United States, Spalding was born in Oregon, where she taught herself to play the violin, and is only 23 years. According to the Diario Río Negro, she is already a recognized talent in the jazz world as a singer, double-base player, and composer of much of her own music.Her newest album is entitled “Esperanza,” (“Hope”) and is being released two years after her first album, “Junjo.”She will perform many new songs from the album, including a Latin version of “Body and Soul,” at the Teatro Español de Neuquén where she will be accompanied by Leo Genovese on piano, Pablo Ito on drums, y Ricardo Voight on guitar.

An historical church in Buenos Aires, the Church of San Miguel, reopened on Sunday after being closed for eight years.According to La Nacion, the church on the corner of Bartolomé Mitre and Suipacha has been closed since 2000 when it was declared potentially unsafe in the case of an earthquake.The church was originally called Nuestra Señora de los Remedios when it was built in 1727, but it was across the street from the Hospital San Miguel and the name of the hospital eventually became the name of the church.An important part of the history of the city of Buenos Aires, the ceremony of reopening was filled with happy church goers and various priests of the Catholic Church.In a few weeks time, the church will once again start holding baptisms and its place in the community will then be fully reestablished.

Tres Rios is an ecological park in an area of low subtropical jungle and mangrove in the Riviera Maya, between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Tres Rios is the only area in the Riviera Maya where cenotes are at ground level in the form of fresh water well that runs in shallow rivers(1.2 Km of length each) toward the sea.

Rosh Hashanah Urbano Festival in Palermo

Rosh Hashanah was celebrated in Buenos Aires this weekend with the event Rosh Hashanah Urbano.According to Yok Time, the event was Saturday and Sunday, from noon to 7 at the plaza by Costa Rica and Armenia.Rosh Hashanah is the JewishNew Year, and as Buenos Aires has an enormous Jewish population, this celebration is an important one for the city.At this year’s event there were live musical performances, including Simja Dujov and the Strudel Klezmer Band and Grupo Samaj, a variety of traditional foods, and many activities.There were even free postcards to send to any friend around the world, just to say Happy Rosh Hashanah!

Onedotzero_buenos aires Showcases Digital Art

This year, from September 26th to the 28th, was the third edition of onedotzero_buenos aires, a celebration of digital art that brought together many of the best artists and designers in the field.According to the official website, many forms of digital media were displayed, including music, architecture, design, cinema, interactive design, computer games, and audio-visual experiences.The event is not unique to Buenos Aires and in fact has been in 60 cities across the world.It took place in two locations: the Centro Cultural Recoleta on Junin 1930, from 1 to 9pm, and the Auditorio Buenos Aires on Av. Pueyrredon 2501.

Protests over Paper Mill May Come to an End

The long protest between the 1.2 billion dollar pulp mill belonging to Finland’s Botnia and the people in Argentina who live across the river from it may be drawing to a conclusion.The mill is in Uruguay on the Paraná River and the Argentines who live across from it have argued that it is polluting their river and their lives.According to MercoPress, Foreign Affairs minister Gonzalo Fernandez of Uruguay said that he had had a meeting with President Cristina Kirchner in which she said that they would begin taking action to remove the picketers and road bocks.However, it is not clear if the Argentine environmental groups in the region agree with Kirchner’s statement.As it is, this issue continues to be a wedge between Uruguay and Argentina.
