The Copper Canyon or Barrancas del cobre is a group of canyons consisting of 6 distinct canyons in the Sierra Tarahumara in the Southwestern part of the state of Chihuahua Mexico. The overall canyon system is larger, and portions are deeper than the Grand Canyon in the Neighboring United States.
Mexico established the Copper Canyon National Park to showcase this remote area. The Canyon is the traditional home of the indigenous Tarahumara people. There are two ways in which you can explore the Canyon. One is by car and the other one, which in my opinion is the most exciting, is by the Chihuahua Al Pacifico railroad Known as the Chepe.
It’s a major rail line in Northwest Mexico linking the city of Chihuahua to the town of Los Mochis Sinaloa near the Pacific Coast. It runs 650 km (400 miles) traversing the Canyon. Some call this the most scenic rail road trip in the continent. 2 passenger trains run daily. One a slightly slower service with more stops for the locals and the other a direct service for tourists that is faster and more expensive.
Many people enjoy taking this trip on the train because of the beautiful scenery and because it is a really relaxing experience. The weather is usually cool but in winter it can get very cold. As you might know, this is one of the very few places in Mexico where you can actually see snow.
People enjoy coming to this canyon because it feels like going back in time and because it is a good way to get out of the city and breath some fresh air.
