West of Monterrey is the famed Huasteca Canyon (cañon de la huasteca), with 300 meter high cliffs and a park in the middle. There are unlimited opportunities for rock climbing, but you have to bring your own equipment. The Huasteca Canyon has many well-maintained trails and its spectacular peaks attract climbing enthusiasts from all over the world. It is the favorite place for weekends climbers.

Since the 1990s, La Huasteca has become a popular weekend destination for families. People number in the hundreds every day, and more in rare occasions when the river is sweller from heavy rains. Because of the large number of visitors, La Huasteca is suffering from a greater amount of left-behind waste. During 2004 the Government tried to solve this problem by charging families $10 to enter some parts of the park, while leaving the climbing ares free to enter.
