ENJOYING THE ARCHITECTURE OF TLAXCALA

Located 75 miles east of Mexico City, Tlaxcala is a quiet town with a population of only 50,000 and it’s the capital city of Mexico’s smallest state. This is a small, extraordinary, beautiful, colonial city that was founded by the Spanish conqueror Hernan Cortez in 1520.

The city is easily explored from the main square (plaza de la constitucion) around which many of the picturesque colonial buildings are located. The plaza itself is the primary meeting place for the locals. Dances are held in the place on weekends and the music and dancing seem to bring over all the people from the surrounding small villages.

If you are able to come to Tlaxcala and visit the main square, make sure to taste specialties like mixiotes (chicken wrapped in leaves), panques de maiz (cornmeal pancakes) or the popular alegria sweets, while listening to the live band play soothing Mexican music in the sunset.

In the city of Tlaxcala as in many other colonial cities in Mexico, you can find nice colonial style hotels as well as museums which were once the homes of famous people from the colonial era. These are actually the main attractions that tourist like to visit. Besides the beautiful architecture of the place, you can also enjoy the beauty of nature in and outside the city. There is a beautiful botanical garden in the city and the beautiful countryside surrounding the city is comprised of mountains, lakes, and even red desert. In the countryside, you will also find huge old Haciendas and Ranches where people enjoy going on weekends.

Finally, one of the most popular offerings of Tlaxcala is the Bull Run in the arena, which has gained worldwide recognition as an exciting form of Mexican entertainment. This is something else you and your family or friends can enjoy while visiting the city of Tlaxcala.
