Tourism: World Travel Market Seeks UNâ€™s Intervention

The World Travel Market Global Trends Report 2008 released on November 10, said tourism development in Africa has been minimal compared to its potential. To this end, the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has been urged to introduce an international registration system to power tourism to new levels in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The report whose research was done in 207 countries by Euromonitor International, the leading global market intelligence company said that fair trade in tourism practices would drive tourist development in the region, promoting the respect of the local communities, the environment, and sharing the economic benefits with the local population. The report also said that the introduction of a recognised trademark, under the auspices of UNWTO, would reassure travelers about the authenticity of the fairtrade claims and be a critical driver of tourists to Africa.

Report challenges claims that airline and tourism expansion benefits the economy and poorer nations

A new report, entitled Plane Truths, from the New Economics Foundation (NEF) and the World Development Movement (WDM) claims that increased air travel and tourism leaves UK taxpayers out of pocket and benefits multinational tour operators and hotel chains rather than poor people. Also, as the fastest-rising source of emissions in the UK, it maintains aviation is a significant contributor to climate change that threatens the survival of some of the worldâ€™s poorest communities.

This week, my wife and I are going to be taking a Jamaica vacation and staying at the all-inclusive Sandals Montego Bay Resort.

I have never been to Jamaica, and I have never stayed at a truly all-inclusive resort.Â So, needless to say, I am looking forward to this Jamaica vacation and escaping the 30 degree and snowy weather here in Minnesota. Yes, we have already received a few days of snow. The Jamaica sun is going to be a nice reminder of summer and sunny days!

Pension Takeover Passes Lower House

Argentina’s lower house voted to approve President Christina Kirchner’s plan to nationalize $26 billion in private pensions.Â A 162 to 75 vote by legislators will send the bill to two senate committees for consideration next week.Â A full senate vote will take place on November 20.Â Â The plan has been controversial, sparking protests and discussion all over the country.Â Nationalizing the funds would give the government a surge of continuing revenue at a time of uncertain economic growth.Â Javier Kulesz, an economist at UBS Pactual in Buenos Aires, said the plan would allot $4.5 billion in new contributions next year.

Telecom Drops 4% in Third-Quarter

Telecom Argentina reported a 4% drop during the third quarter due to inflationary pressures.Â The Buenos Aires-based company’s records put net income at $69 million in the quarter ending Sept. 30. That’s down from $71.8 million from lastÂ year.Â However, the telephone company is reporting net profits of $263 million from January to September, 35% higher than the same period inÂ 2007.Â Inflation was cited as the cause for the drop, as the peso fell significantly against the U.S. dollar during the third-quarter.
