Soy Prices May Soon be on the Rise Again

Good news for Argentine farmers, it looks like soy prices may be on the rise again after a period of decline over the past several months.Gustavo Grobocopatel, dubbed the “Soy King” by Argentine media, believes that the slump in prices has to end because, if demand was really permanently down, it would be that all of Asia had changed its eating habits. He says that this is about as likely as Europeans deciding to remove ham from their diets.According to Forbes, Argentina is the third largest exporter of soy in the world and the top supplier of soyoil and meal.In fact, oilseed accounted for a quarter of their export earnings last year, which means that the recent drop in prices has really hurt them.Grobocopatel believes prices won’t fall much lower and that if soy farmers stick with their crops—as he intends to—they will see high prices come back again.

Number of Argentine Emigrants Rising Again

The number of Argentines leaving the country is rising once again, a reversal of the trend since emigrations were lessening after the peak of the devaluation crisis.According to the Clarín, 37,502 Argentines have left the country this year, up from 28.572 in all of 2007 and 14,673 in 2006.The peak of Argentine immigration, of course, was soon after the peso crash, when in 2002 91,370 Argentines left the country. However, after 2002, numbers began to drop quickly and it wasn’t until 2006 that they began to rise again.Speculating on why, the report suggests that more and more Argentines are leaving to study abroad, to take advantage of career opportunities that may not be available in Argentina, and to escape fears about Argentina’s uncertain future.Scholars looking at these figures stress that they do include tourists and business travelers; not all are actually emigrants.

Aerolineas Argentinas, the flagship airline of the nation and former national business, has been reacquired officially now that the Senate has voted in its favor.According to the BBC News, Christina Kirchner bought the airline—and its enormous debt—from the Spanish Company Grupo Marsans in July and the decision was initially greeted with a lot of enthusiasm by Argentines. Many remembered the hay days of the airlines when it still belonged to Argentina and was known for its quality service and on-time departures. Now perhaps this legacy will be rebuilt, but the problems with labor and with full costs (which currently plague most airlines) will make it hard to get it out of debt and running smoothly once again.
