US Court Freezes Argentina’s Assets

In December of 2001, Argentina defaulted on more than $100 billion dollars in debts to foreign bondholders due to the economic crisis.  After the recent successful nationalization of more than $23 billion dollars of private pension funds, a US court granted a request to freeze the Argentine government’s newly acquired assets.  US District Court Judge Thomas Griesa made the ruling in Thursday, the 11, in response to a motion filed by NML Capital Ltd., which represents some of the bondholders.  After the debt defaulted, the bondholders were either given 30 cents per dollar as retribution, or wait to for the courts to work out a suit.  $553 million dollars were frozen by the court order.

A Second Golden Age for Argentina’s Cinema

CNN reports on the blossoming of Argentine cinema the past few years, proclaiming it a second golden age of film.  Argentine cinema was prolific and successful until the advent of creative restrictions that came with Peronism in the 1940s.  The return to democracy in 1983 brought about a wave of artistry, marked by Luiz Puenzo’s “The Official Story” winning an Oscar in 1985.  The crisis in 2001 hampered the industry once again, but a group of young directors have garnered popularity in Latin America as well as the interest of international critics. Pablo Trapero, Lucrecia Martel and Daniel Burman are the names to watch, the individuals winning awards at Cannes for their social commentary and comedy. This “New Argentine Cinema” is based at the Instituto Nacional de Cine y Artes Audiovisuales.  Over 12,000 students are enrolled, and who knows, maybe Palermo Hollywood is more than just an up and coming neighborhood.

Argentina’s Peso Falls for 17th Day

Argentina’s peso has been falling since 2002, when the government abandoned the 1:1 ratio with the dollar.  In the past two weeks, that decline has been evident.  Currently, the ratio renders 3.4 pesos for every 1 American dollar.  It began to drop .7 percent a day since November 12.   These concerns don’t seem to worry the banks, as currency trader Daniel Bou Kahir remarked, “The central bank is letting the peso devalue in a gradual and controlled manner.” Kahir is based at Banco de la Pampa in Buenos Aires.

Uruguay Challenges Argentina’s Reign in Wine

The Los Angeles Times reports on the growing prowess of the wineries of Argentina’s northern neighbor.  The small country’s Juanico region is composed almost entirely of vineyards- and wine tourism.  Only a 45 minute drive away from Rio de la Plata it’s certainly worth a taste.  The area is known for containing the “Wine Roads,” a stretch of 15 bodegas where wine aficionados can explore vineyards, cellars and sample local cuisine.  Spanish settlers brought the first grapevines to Uruguay during the colonial period, with Tannat serving as the primary grape.  On the whole, Uruguayan wines have a lower alcohol content and are thought of as “softer and more approachable.”

Argentina’s 21 Billion Dollar Plan

President Cristina Kirchner revealed her expansive, and expensive, massive public spending plan to insert more than 21 billion dollars into the Argentine economy.  Aimed at countering both the effects of the global financial crisis and predictions that Argentina’s economic growth will slow from 6.5 to 4 percent in 2009, the plan focuses on infrastructure. Kirchner was quoted as saying in an AFP article, “There are public works that call for (intensive) manual labor. Works that will mean hiring more than the 362,000 workers currently in the building sector, increasing the number to nearly 770,000 jobs.”  Along with a focus on construction, Kirchner also introduced a bill that would entice Argentines to bring back their funds from banks abroad, paying only a tax between one and eight percent.  Businesses that encourage employment will also receive tax incentives and debt relief.

Argentina’s Tax Revenue on Rise

Most likely due to a surge in exports of fuel and grains, Argentina’s tax revenue rose 38 percent to 24.3 billion pesos ($7.3 billion) in October, the second highest level ever.  This information comes at a time when most economists were predicting a recession.  Auto production slowed 7.7 percent in October, after the onset of the global financial crisis.  Argentine officials, however, remain hopeful.  Claudio Moroni, head of Argentina’s tax agency, told reporters “We are still seeing a strong level of economic activity and tax collection.”  And Interior Minister Florencio Randazzo was quoted as saying “We’re optimistic about the future of Argentina.  We’re more optimistic than ever.”  The monthly budget has yet to be released.
