Croatian Artist SofiaSilvia exhibits in London

Exhibition ‘Common Outlands’ by Croatian artist SofiaSilvia (Silvia Potočki) has been opened tonight at The Gallery of the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia at 21 Conway Street , London W1T 6BN.

The exhibition will last until 23 Nov 2008.

Space Invader Artist Invades Argentina

An unknown artist is decorating the buildings of Argentina—and many other countries around the world—with mosaics depicting the invaders from the classic video game “Space Invaders.”This strange artistic endeavor, done in the dark of night, celebrates the 30th anniversary of the game, designed in Japan by Toshihiro Nishikado in 1978.The mosaic style allows the depiction of the space invader to appear in its early, ultra-pixilated form.According to the Clarín, the anonymous initiator of the movement has a website in which he claims that while some call him an urban contaminator, some an artist, he prefers to think of himself as a “space invader.”It is probable that the mosaics are now being created by many different people around the globe, so it hard to say if we really have the original space invader among us in Argentina.

On Saturday, Perez Celis died of leukemia in Otamendi sanitarium in Buenos Aires, the city in which he was born in 1939.Celis was one of Argentina’s most well known and respected contemporary artists; he did murals, paintings, and sculptures.One of his most recent projects was illustrating a Spanish translation of Walt Whitman’s great book of poems, Leave of Grass.Celis made his name known around the world, living in Lima, Caracas, Montevideo, Paris and New York.According to the Associated Press, his wake will be held at the club of his beloved Boca Juniors.Two of his murals decorate Boca’s stadium, where they can be seen by thousands of Argentines at every game of his favorite team.

Famous Uruguayan Artist Displays Work in Tigre

Carlos Páez Vilaró, now 85 years old, is a famous Uruguayan artist who lives several months of the year in Tigre. Last Saturday, a retrospective of his work opened at the Museo de Arte Tigre (Museum of Art in Tigre).According to La Nación,the retrospective brings together 115 works, most of which are paintings, though there are a few sculptures.There were many works to chose from; Vilaró first began exhibiting work in 1950.As a young painter he focused on afro-Uruguayan scenes, then experimented with bright colors, collages, and finally black and white photography.Today he continues to change and says he is honored to have his work shown in Tigre, where he has had a house for 25 years.

The Argentine artist Gloria Achucarro received a bronze medal for her statue entitled Tiempo y Ser (Time and Being).According to Revista Ñ, the statue was chosen from among many in an international competition that lasted several years.In 2006 over 3,000 artists registered to participate.From that original number, 290 works were then chosen to be judged and displayed around the world.29 pieces eventually were selected as the best in the world and Achucarro received a bronze medal to recognize her achievement.Now, her statue will be on display at the Olympic Games in Beijing, along with the other winners.

The Argentine artist Fabian Perez currently has a show of paintings and sculptures opening in Sydney, entitled “Waiting for The Romance To Come Back.”According to Stuff, the show consists of over 50 paintings inspired mostly from his years growing up in Buenos Aires.As a child, Perez lived among the bars and the brothels that are the stuff of tango lyrics in Buenos Aires.For him, they were a part of every day life; his father owned the brothel and his mother was the “madam” until they were shut down in the 1970s.Now, Perez is a world famous painter.He has had shows in the U.S., Canada, and Europe and his paintings have sold in Sydney to restaurateurs and real estate developers.
