On October 9th, Gilberto Gil is presenting his newest project, entitled “Banda Larga Cordel,” at the Teatro Gran Rex in Buenos Aires.According to Ticketek, Gilberto Gil is from Salvador, Brazil and is an incredibly successful singer, songwriter, and guitarist.Though he began his career playing Bossa Nova music, his work became more socially conscious and political, causing the Brazilian military regime to at one point hold him captive for nine months. He has released 50 albums over the course of his career, 12 of which went gold and 5 went platinum.He has won 7 Grammy Awards and sold more than four million disks in total.Obviously a star performer, you can see his show buy buying tickets at Ticketek beginning at 40 pesos.

Brazilian Air Force Flies Penguins Back Home

Over 1,000 penguins have ended up on the shores of Brazil this year, and the Brazilian air force is now flying and shipping these penguins back home to the coast of Patagonia.The penguins are, presumably, lost, having come too far north in the search for food in winter.According to the BBC, these birds normally live in the colder waters of Patagonia at the southern tip of Argentina.Scientists are worried that penguins have had to swim so far north, 1,860 miles, for food because their normal food supply has been disrupted.Those who are ready to be introduced back into their habitat are being flown home and those who are still exhausted from their trip will be shipped back by boat, giving them time to recover.

Famous Brazilian singer Maria Rita is coming to Buenos Aires to perform tomorrow, September 18th, at the Teatro Gran Rex at 9:30pm.According to her official website, Maria Rita is the daughter of two icons of Brazilianmusic, Elis Regina and Cesar Camargo Mariano.She wanted to start singing at the age of 14 but went to college first—New York University—and then launched her career at the age of 24 with an eponymous album.The album went platinum, selling 500,000 copies in Brazil, and winning her the Best New Artist award at the Latin Grammy Awards.Since then she has released two more CDs, both of which were huge hits.She returns to Buenos Aires to promote her latest album; tickets can be purchased at Ticketek.

After a massive oil spill off the coast of Montevideo, Uruguay, many penguins were rescued by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and treated.Yesterday, some of these penguins were released back to their home in Maldonado, Uruguay after being treated by veterinarians.According to Market Watch, The original spill was caused when two oil-tankers collided, causing 14,000 cubic meters of fuel oil to be poured into the ocean.This oil drifted towards Buenos Aires, endangering a large amount of South American wildlife.Seabirds are very vulnerable to oil—it destroyed their protective oils and causes them to have hypothermia when cold water penetrates their coats.Two Argentina organizations have been assisting IFAW: FMM (Fundación Mundo Marino) and FPN (Fundación Patagonia Natural).

Global Lodging Leader Announces Integrated Strategy to Address Climate Change

Marriott International, Inc. (NYSE: MAR) and the state of Amazonas today signed an agreement to support the first project of its kind to help protect 1.4 million acres of endangered rainforest. This innovative partnership between government and the private sector is one of the first in the world to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation. Marriott has committed $2 million to fund an environmental management plan administered by the newly created Amazonas Sustainable Foundation. By year end, Marriott guests and group customers will also be able to offset the greenhouse gas emissions generated from their hotel stays by contributing to this rainforest fund. In addition to offering this carbon offset, Marriott is taking new steps to reduce the company's water, waste and energy consumption; green its supply chain; build greener hotels; and engage employees and guests to take action.
