Happy, although a bit saddle-sore from riding the range, we gave our horsies a final pat and drove to the Hadsten House Inn and Spa in Solvang. Don’t let the modest exterior throw you, the HH is so not your everyday motor lodge.

Surf’s up and it’s time to head back to the beach. Our stay for the next two nights was the Harbor View Inn perfectly situated across from West Beach. Sitting on our private, over-sized outdoor deck we had unobstructed views of a fiery sunset dipping it’s blood red nails into the ocean. Besides a primo location, this four-Diamond resort has all the other requisite amenties including a lovely pool, a fitness center and the full service Spa Beaumontia.

Solvang is an all-in-good-fun slightly hokey, homey Danish American town affectionately referred to as Little Denmark. European farm-style buildings line the colorful flower-filled streets, and authentic Scandi bakeries,(I loved the “kringles” almond paste filled racetrack shaped pastries but was not so big a fan of the overly-sweet “aebleskiver,” fried pancake balls ladled with raspberry jam and powdered sugar ) windmills, art galleries, shops and wine tasting rooms lend it old-style flavor. Granted it’s touristy, yet it’s spread out enough so you never felt packed in by other day-trippers.

We had an early morning reservation for a walking tour of Lotusland, so we had a quick cappuccino on the roof and then got totally lost-per usual- on what should have been a five minute drive. ( No more easy HWY 101 directions.) There’s probably nothing worse than a bossy writer, however, anyone visiting within 100 miles of Santa Barbie MUST make it a priority to check out this 37 acre botanical wonderland filled with rare, exotic cacti, palms, aloe, and brilliant tangled tropical plants.

Finally hit downtown Santa Barbara where we tangled with a bunch of one-way streets before reaching the Canary Hotel. This full service luxury boutique hotel has 99 rooms-all were filled on the Monday night we stayed.
