From our Win a Trip Contest
A travel story by - Shirley G.
My son & I went to Hawaii to visit Pearl Harbor. We rented a Mustang convertible. I had not driven a convertible since the days of manually pulling the top to put the roof back on! We were on our way to Pearl Harbor, driving with the top down & it began to rain. We had to stop for a red light, so thinking we should put the top back up so not to get drenched, I pushed the button to start the process. I did not realize that the roof STOPPED if the car was put in gear. The light turned green, and as we were the first car in line we had to go. The roof was straight up and down and of course, that is where it stayed as we drove down the street. There were plenty of spectators, due to a tour bus right along side of us in the next lane. We drove to the first street that we could turn off on and stopped. We finished putting the top on and went on our way. I told my 11 year old son, that we would never forget the memories made on that trip!

Hawaii is the perfect place to just sit back on the beach and relax, but it is also a great place to immerse yourself in the local culture. Even though Hawaii is part of the United States, it has its own very unique culture that is very different than on the mainland. There are special events, festivals and cultural activities going on every day on all of the islands, so you will have plenty do while you are enjoying your Hawaii vacation.

For many travelers, Hawaii vacations are a “once in a lifetime” dream vacation (until they visit once and then decide they absolutely MUST come back). For people who are realizing that dream and planning a vacation to the Aloha State, knowing which Hawaiian Islands to visit can be a daunting decision.

As great as southern California is, sometimes I’ve just got to get away. My favorite get-away is Hawaii, there’s no place better to unwind and enjoy paradise. It’s a totally easy flight, and in no time I’m laying on a beach, whale watching, trying out a surfboard, driving up a mountain or watching a gorgeous sunset. It’s such a relaxed, beautiful, healing place. Every time I’ve been there I can’t wait to go back. Like now.

The best way to experience a new place and culture is to listen to the amazing stories of the locals. In Hawaii, residents are extremely passionate about their homes, praising the land, the sea, and everything in between that makes them love living there. I stumbled upon a trove of wonderful accounts of the islands on GoHawaii.com called Stories of Hawaii.
