International Artisan Fair

Over 600 artisans from Argentina and the world will gather from December 5- 14th to share their wares, talent and cultures at La Rural Exhibition Center.  Located at Avenida Sarmiento 2704, the event runs from 3pm-10pm and is 12 pesos for adults and kids under 8 are free.  It’s a great opportunity to explore the creative and handcrafted side of South America at lower prices than gift shops. Last year, over 50,000 people came by to gaze at the crafts.

Boca Loses to International in Copa Sudamericana

Internacional, a Brazilian soccer team, won a comfortable victory over Boca, 2-0, in the first game of the quarter final round of the Copa Sudamericana.According to Goal.com, the score does not reflect all the chances that Internacional had to score; the goalkeeper for Boca, Javier Garcia, played an exceptional match and kept his team in the game and in the running.No goals were scored until the 49th minute of the game, and the second goal was scored in the 88th minute.The loss is disappointing for Boca fans who hoped to take the momentum from their Superclásico victory over River into this game.The match took place in Beira-Rio stadium in Porto Alegre and the next match will take place in the famous Bombonera, Boca’s home stadium in Buenos Aires.

A country that is still plagued by some of the unpunished human rights abuses of the last military dictatorship, Argentina is in many ways an idea place to build the first International Human Rights institute.According to the Clarín, the center was approved unanimously by UNESCO and will be based in the building which housed the ESMA. The ESMA was a center through which 5,000 of Argentina’s disappeared passed and, since being reclaimed by the people of Argentina, it has been the Instituto Espacio para la Memoria (Institute Space for Memory), a place to remember the tragedies of the past. Now it will house an institute dedicated to promoting human rights throughout the world, trying to make the future brighter without forgetting much of the darkness of the past.

8th International Meeting of Juvenile Orchestras

The 8th Annual International Meeting of Juvenile Orchestras is being held in Buenos Aires right now.It began on Saturday and finishes today, bringing together youth orchestras from all across Argentina, Colombia, Paraguay, Chile, and Mexico. According to the Clarínevent weblog, the event this weekend took place at the Facultad de Derecho at Av. Figueroa Alcorta 2263; each group had a chance to perform their music for thirty minutes.The final events today will happen at Luna Park at Bouchard 465.The event today begins at 8:30pm with the performance of the Orquesta Estudiantil de Buenos Aires, directed by Maestro Guillermo Zalcman.Entrance to see these young musical talents is free.

Yesterday, the International Congress of Soccer met for its annual two day conference in Cordoba in the salons of the hotel of the Automóvil Club Argentino.According to La Voz, the Congress draws players, coaches, trainers, advertisers, and journalists from around the world to talk about the state of soccer today and discuss its future in Argentina and beyond.This is only the second ever meeting of the International Congress of Soccer, which began last year in Cordoba and was a huge success.This year, it seems, will be equally successful, as big names in soccer such as former World Cup winners Jorge Raúl Solari and Rubén Hugo Ayala.

The Cristo Redendor Tunnel, which connects Argentina and Chile, was reopened yesterday at 9am.According to the Diario de Cuyo,it had been closed Monday due to a heavy snow fall on the Chilean side that blocked the tunnel, preventing trucks carrying goods from passing between the two.In winter, this is not an uncommon occurrence, but it is important to get the tunnel reopened as quickly as possible.This tunnel is near Mendoza and is next to a large statue of Christ, which stands on the border between the two nations and symbolizes their friendship.Tourists can visit the statue, and see the tunnel that connects the two nations, by taking bus trips from Mendoza into the heart of the Andes.
