Trains in Italy: the new “High Speed”.

A new era: from Jan 14th the High Speed/High Capacity train system starts, here all the news.

This is a new high-tech network that will revolutionize how Italians and tourists visiting Italy will travel in the future! With the completion of the high-speed network and the launch of HS services between Bologna and Milan, a further decisive step towards a revolution in Italy’s mobility will have been made: the birth of a vast metropolitan network in which big cities will be the neighborhoods of a new metropolis: Italy. Three and a half hours to go from Milan (book here you hotel in Milan) to Rome (book here your hotel in Rome). Less than five hours to reach Naples and only 65 minutes to get to Bologna. My Multi-Sensory Italy

Italy, above all countries, is a place to be experienced with every sense. Here are the sensory experiences that signal to me that I am, in fact, here:

1. The smell of coffee bubbling up through a stovetop espresso machine, and the vague scent of raw flame heating metal underneath. My nose tingles just writing about it.

2. The sound of Italians speaking to each other in swiftly lilting words that may as well be set to a score. Angry words rise to crescendo in a furious aria, friendly advice comes in softly comforting notes, jokes trip along in a happy cadence- it’s no wonder that operas are written in Italian.

Silvio Berlusconi Back in Power in Italy

The return of Berlusconi to power in Italy with the help of a controversial ally, the Northern League, has led some to ask “Should Italy be broken up into two countries?”

The discussion centers around the prosperous north subsidizing the poorer southern regions.

Now, Veronica Lario, Berlusconi’s wife has made a statement on breaking Italy in two. In an interview with La Stampa, she said: “Italy has never been well-suited to being a single country, and has never matured enough to become one. There is no longer any value in a unified Italy."

Florence, Italy Train Station

The main train station in Florence, Italy is also known as Santa Maria Novella, I am assuming this is because it is located right behind the church of the same name.

The train station is located on the fringe of the historic center of the city. It is an easy walk to many of the hotels, however, if you are staying in a hotel near the Duomo, the Uffizi or the Ponte Vecchio and have luggage you may need to take a taxi. Without luggage you can easily walk to the Duomo and Uffizi. I find it difficult to roll luggage for a long distance on cobblestone streets.
