Lionel Messi, one of Argentina’s best young soccer players, has been told by his club team, Barcelona, that he will not be play in any friendly games for Argentina.According to La Capital, the controversy which began with the Barcelona trying to keep Messi from playing in the Olympics continues.Barcelona, somewhat understandably, hoped to keep Messi in Spain to help them win some important games, but eventually they had to give in and let Messi go.Now, even though they are letting him participate in the World Cup Qualifier matches, they are trying to limit his time away from the Barcelona team by keeping him out of non-tournament matches, called “friendlies.”

Boca to Play in Copa Sudamericana Quarter Finals

One of Buenos Aires’s most beloved—and depending on who you talk to, hated—soccer teams, La Boca, advanced to the quarter finals of the Copa Sudamericana on Wednesday.They played in Quito, Ecuador and beat Liga Deportiva Universitaria after holding the Ecuadorian side to a 1-1 draw.According to ESPN Soccer Net, Ecuador is now eliminated and Boca will move forward in the tournament to face a tough Brazilian opponent, team name Internacional, in the quarter finals.One other Argentine team, the Argentinos Juniors, advanced to the quarter finals.Juniors beat the Mexican team San Luis Potosi 2-0 at home in Diego Maradona Stadium.Juniors will also face a Brazilian team, this one named Palmeiras, in the quarter finals.

Ginobili Will Not Play in Start of NBA Season

Manu Ginobili, a well known Argentine around the world for his incredible basketball skills, will not be able to begin the NBA season for the San Antonio Spurs because the injury to his left ankle is not yet fully healed.According to the Associated Press, Ginobili had surgery in early September because he had further exacerbated an already existing injury playing for Argentina in the Olympic Games.While some might say that he has let his NBA team down, his coach Gregg Popovich says that it is really a blessing.The surgery has cleaned his ankle out and now it will have a chance to really heal instead of getting only partly better.Ginobili will probably miss the first two months of the season and is currently training with the team, going slowly through the process of rehabilitation.

The highly anticipated match has arrived: Argentina and Brazil will be playing each other in the semi-finals of the Olympic Games.To get to this point, Brazil beat Cameroon and Argentine beat the Netherlands this past weekend in what were two tough quarter-final matches. Lionel Messi gave a particularly excellent performance, showing yet again why both Barcelona and Argentina were so eager to have him playing with them these two weeks. Since Brazil and Argentina were two of the favorite teams to win the gold medal this year, this match is going to be exciting and tough. The game will be this coming Saturday, and no doubt the cafes of Argentina will be packed with soccer fans cheering on their team.

Victoria “Vicky” Tanco is the youngest player by far at this year’s US Women’s Open, and she is from Moreno, Argentina.Tanco’s talent was obvious from a very young age.At 6, she was playing golf in her home town and by the age of 8 she had won her first international tournament in the 9 to 10-year-old age bracket.According to ESPN, Tanco won her first Argentine golf tournament when she was 12, competing against players in the 15-year-old bracket.Now, this golf prodigy is playing at the US Women’s Open.Tanka is delighted to be there and confident.However, no matter how good she is, she won’t consider joining the LPGA tour until she graduates from high school.
