Good news for Argentine farmers, it looks like soy prices may be on the rise again after a period of decline over the past several months.Gustavo Grobocopatel, dubbed the “Soy King” by Argentine media, believes that the slump in prices has to end because, if demand was really permanently down, it would be that all of Asia had changed its eating habits. He says that this is about as likely as Europeans deciding to remove ham from their diets.According to Forbes, Argentina is the third largest exporter of soy in the world and the top supplier of soyoil and meal.In fact, oilseed accounted for a quarter of their export earnings last year, which means that the recent drop in prices has really hurt them.Grobocopatel believes prices won’t fall much lower and that if soy farmers stick with their crops—as he intends to—they will see high prices come back again.

Last Friday, the Argentine government announced that natural gas prices may rise as much as 30 percent for the wealthiest Argentines.According to the Associated Press, the rise will affect only the residencies, businesses, and industrial buyers who consume the most fuel and should impact only half of the 6.5 million homes connected to a natural gas pipeline. This announcement, made by Planning Minister Julio de Vido, comes as a response to some doubts from abroad as to whether or not President Kirchner will be able to pay the debt. The hike will also allow the government to cut the price of natural gas canisters from 7 dollars to 5 dollars for 13 million of the nation’s poorest people.
