Brazil says it will cut carbon by at least 36 percent

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - Brazil says it will voluntarily reduce carbon emissions by 36.1 percent to 38.9 percent by 2020.

Dilma Rousseff is chief of staff for President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. She says the cuts Brazil will present at a climate summit in Copenhagen next month will be on a voluntary basis only. She says the nation will not accept mandatory cuts.

Brazilian Environment Minister Carlos Minc has said the majority of Brazil's emission cuts will come from slowing deforestation, which scientists think is responsible for 20 percent of the globe's carbon emissions.

A new, landmark study on the impact of an emerging global “green economy” on the world of work says efforts to tackle climate change could result in the creation of millions of new “green jobs” in the coming decades.

The new report 1/ entitled Green Jobs: Towards Decent work in a Sustainable, Low-Carbon World, says changing patterns of employment and investment resulting from efforts to reduce climate change and its effects are already generating new jobs in many sectors and economies, and could create millions more in both developed and developing countries.

In an exclusive interview today, Leilani Latimer, Sabre's Director of Sustainability Initiatives, asserted that the global travel business must work together to identify and implement a clear, transparent and verifiable certification system for sustainable tourism. Furthermore she emphasised that any system that relied solely on self certification would not be good enough. “The value to the general public of a system that is not based on outside certification is nil” She said.
